SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT       Call to faithfulness
Reading I

Genesis 12:1-4 (call of Abraham)

Reading II 2 Timothy 1:8b-10 (exhortation to faithfulness)
Gospel Matthew 17:1-9 (Jesus transfigured)
Key Passage

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. (Matthew 17:1-2)

Jesus speaks words of comfort; he speaks of easy yokes and light burdens.

Jesus also challenges; he speaks of following his path of suffering and death.

In both cases, we are summoned to "listen to him!"

BAPTISM PREPARATION :
This preparation consists of a visit at home from members of our baptism team followed by three evenings of reflection on the significance of the request made by the parents. We start the reflection sessions on Tuesday, February 22; and the baptism will be celebrated on April 3.

LENT - WE CLIMB THE HOLY MOUNTAIN OF EASTER :
Lent does not exist for itself; we observe it for the sake of Easter, the church's celebration of Christ's victory over death and sin. There would be no Lenten season, just as there would be no Christmas, if it was not for Jesus Christ having been crucified and having been raised from the dead for our sake. This is such an enormous event of faith that its celebration needs to be prepared for during these forty days of Lent.

How to observe the Lenten season? The three traditional Lenten practices of praying, fasting and almsgiving are hard to beat, even if they may pose some challenges in our time.

PRAYER

Prayer, not to be restricted to church, but to be practiced at home as well. There is some reflection material at the entrance to the church. And if you are on the internet, try www.sacredspace.ie. Good stuff there.

FASTING

Fasting in the form of refraining from some food, a drink, a party, a video or another form of entertainment can be a beautiful gesture of solidarity with the poor in our world. It can also be healthy for ourselves when it helps us gain a certain freedom from things we depend on or are imprisoned by.

ALMS

The almsgiving of Lent is best based on the Lenten fasting. We put the money we save from our Lenten fasting aside and gradually build up our contribution to the Development and Peace collection at the end of Lent.

NEXT SUNDAY AT 9:00 A.M. MASS - A SLIGHT CHANGE :
A few weeks ago we reflected a bit more deliberately on "getting to Church on Sunday". It is such a routine action, but important aspects of our faith come into focus in that routine action: We come together as Christians, we sign ourselves with the cross while using baptismal water, we sing our praise and thanks to God, we know ourselves called by God to be God's beloved people. We emphasized these aspects of our faith a bit more while we had the Confirmation and First Communion candidates in our midst.

They will be with us again next Sunday. That gives us an opportunity to pay more attention to the first part of the Mass when the focus is on the Bible, the Book of God's Word. That plays a prominent role when we come together as God's people. That part of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Word, will be re-arranged a bit, but it won't make the Mass much longer.

IN THE DESERT WITH JESUS - ANOTHER WAY OF LOOKING AT LENT :
There are many layers to Lent. There are 40 days to the Lenten season. They remind us of the 40 days of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness. These, in turn, recall the 40 years of Israel's temptation in the wilderness on their journey to the Promised Land.

What kind of a place is the desert? Our Bible associates some basic notions or themes with the desert. During Lent you'll find a golden rod slip attached to the Sunday bulletin covering each week a key biblical theme. In some small way it may help us get to know the Bible and it may provide some food for thought for the Lenten period.
