Food for Thought
|
- I imagine myself in the scene for a few moments. Who am I? How do I feel?
- Jesus has time for the disciples and for the crowds. Can I see the chances I have to spend time with him in my day?
- These can be just times of just being, of listening, of challenge. What can I hear from the one who wants to be with me today?

ESCALATING CONFLICT IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Message by the CCCB (Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops) Human Rights Committee
At a time when the conflict is escalating in the Middle East and when powerless civilians are caught in the crossfire between warring factions, the International community seems unable to work together to put an end to the fighting. We urge the Government of Canada to exercise its influence to encourage dialogue among the political leaders in order to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible. Dialogue and mediation are values that define Canadian society, and these traits should guide Canada in assisting to find a solution to this conflict.
It is imperative that all parties respect international rights and conventions in order to guarantee the safety and security of all civilians in the Middle East. In addition, the acts of violence and all forms of reprisal against the innocent and defenceless must cease immediately.
Also, together with Pope Benedict XVI, who has invited "the local Churches to pray especially for peace in the Holy land and in the entire Middle East," we appeal to all Catholics in Canada to pray to God that harmony be restored and that the safety of the most vulnerable be ensured. We urge political leaders to dedicate themselves to finding a peaceful solution to this conflict through dialogue.
Most Reverend Roger Ébacher,
Archbishop of Gatineau and Chairman of the Human Rights Committee

OTHER RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE INTERNATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMUNITY
|
- The Vatican issues a statement by the Holy Father proclaiming this Sunday July 23 as a special day of prayer and penance for peace in Middle East, appealing "to charitable organizations to help all the people struck by this pitiless conflict".
- Development and Peace formally asks for Canadian government intervention to end the fighting in Lebanon and Gaza in a letter signed by its President Margie Noonan.
- Caritas Internationalis releases a statement concerning the violence in Lebanon and Gaza, urging the international community and political leaders to uphold international law and help the people of Israel, of Palestine and of Lebanon to step back from the brink of full-scale war.
- Development and Peace sends $100,000 to help people displaced by the conflict in Lebanon.
- Caritas Jerusalem has launched a 1.16 million euro appeal last month to support the project Emergency Support for Palestine. (Caritas Jerusalem is one of the few groups providing aid to the men, women and children of the militarily ravaged Gaza Strip, hanging on the edge of a full-blown humanitarian disaster.)
