Food for Thought
|
- Can I picture this scene on the road leading out to Jericho? What buildings are around? What is the road surface like? Where is Bartimaeus sitting?
- What is going on? Can I imagine myself present and watching the scene unfolding? I might even imagine myself as a participant…Bartimaeus, even.
- When I see and hear and am touched by what happens, how does it move me?

NOVEMBER, THE MONTH IN WHICH WE REMEMBER THE DECEASED:
This week we begin the month of November in which traditionally we give more attention to the remembrance of the dead. However, Christians do so in a unique way based on what is central to our faith: the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
You will see for all of the month of November the so-called Book of Life at the front of the church. The Book of Life contains the names of deceased parishioners and relatives. Some additional pages are provided at the back of the book for that purpose, unless you decide to make up your own book.
It is one way of expressing our faith that the dead find peace with God and will be raised to life when the Lord Jesus comes in glory. The Book is placed next to the Easter Candle which speaks of the ultimate victory of life over death, of light over darkness in the dead and risen Jesus in which we are called to share.
WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 1st, 7:00 P.M. - MASS IN WHICH WE REMEMBER THE DECEASED:
November 2nd, we used to call it All Souls Day. That is not wrong, but the Catholic Calendar today calls it Commemoration of the Faithful Departed. Whatever the name, we’ll mark that day with a celebration of the Eucharist on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
At that Mass we’ll make special mention of the parishioners we have buried from OLV and St. Malachy this past year. Part of that will be the lighting of a smaller candle for each one of them. We’ll light that smaller candle from the Easter Candle. That will be our faith speaking: we express our hope that our deceased may share in the victory that Jesus Christ won for us in his death and resurrection.
If, during the last year, a close relative died elsewhere and you want that person mentioned and remembered in this way as well, please phone the rectory and leave your name and number.
ANY CANDIDATES FOR CONFIRMATION, FOR FIRST COMMUNION? NOVEMBER 12th IS THE DEADLINE:
We would like to hear from parents who want to have their children make their first communion. The children would normally be about eight years old and up. Similarly, we would like to hear from parishioners who are 15 years and up who have not been confirmed if they are interested in being confirmed. Please, contact us before November 12th.
It would be helpful if you would draw this item to the attention of those who might be interested. Thank you.
GET-TOGETHER FOR LEADERS IN ENGLISH PARISHES - NEXT SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4th:
Trying to meet the pastoral challenges that face us as Anglophone parishes today is quite a task. Trying to go it alone makes it even more difficult. But together with other Anglophone parishes we may be able to take some small steps that keep us encouraged and hope-filled. That is why we would like to see all who have a leadership position in our parishes come together next Saturday, November 4 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. We will meet at Our Lady of Annunciation parish, 189 rue Archambault, Hull sector.
The main part of that morning we will be struggling with that challenge of the bishop trying to move from the practice of preparing for sacraments to the practice of forming for Christian life. That is easier said than done. No one can claim to have the magic formula for that. But, who knows, the Spirit may set us on the right path, if we get our hearts and our heads together.
PPC members, Wardens, members of parish committees, all parish ministries, and interested parishioners are strongly urged to be part of this workshop. May we count on you?
When: Saturday November 4th, 9:00 a.m. – 12th noon.
Where: Our Lady of Annunciation, 189 rue Archambault (Hull sector).
THANK YOU FOR A GREAT SUPPER:
Lots of work went into preparing and putting on last Friday’s Harvest Supper. And it drew many participants; all tickets were gone. A good mix from O.L.V. and St. Malachy parishioners and a good number from “elsewhere.”
Special mention is due for the beautiful cooperation between members of our two parishes. Many thanks to those who put on the supper. And many thanks to all those who supported the event by participating and enjoying the fellowship and the supper.
The proceeds of $2805.00, from the supper will be shared equally by each parish.
WARDENS NEEDED:
Two wardens are needed for next term starting in January. If you are interested in helping out your parish in that capacity, you may contact one of the wardens or the office.
COOKBOOK FUND RAISER:
Please submit your favorite recipes ASAP. Everyone has some. You may drop them in the collection basket any time. We are looking forward to receiving a good number so as to make our book interesting.
PRAYERS AND SYMPATHY:
Our prayers and sympathy are with the Stanyar and Dube families on the death of their wife, mother, daughter and sister, Cathy.
