Food for Thought |
- In many parts f the ancient world the spittle of good people was believed to be curative. In using his spittle, Jesus was doing what the patient believed a doctor would do; like a good healer he built on the expectation of the sick person.
- Beyond that, Jesus was revealing the power of God. Sickness and misfortune can be a chance to show the glory of God working in our own lives.
- Lord, keep me open to you when tragedy really strikes. Let me feel your hand there.

ARE YOU NEW TO OUR PARISH? WELCOME!
Welcome to those who want to make our parish their faith home. You may have come from other places. You may have been “away for a while”. Be assured that we love to have you among us. We would appreciate it very much if you identified yourself at Mass. It would also help if you would take the time to fill out a registration form. The next time you are with us, you may leave it in the collection basket or give it to one of the ushers or to the priest. Thank you and welcome.

LENT - WE CLIMB THE HOLY MOUNTAIN OF EASTER
Yes, there is an end to Lent! And it is both fast approaching and early this year: March 19. But the end of Lent is the very purpose for which we observe Lent: to make us ready for the annual celebration of the central mystery of our faith: the death and resurrection of Jesus, our Saviour.
This is not simply a remembering of an event that took place almost 2000 years ago. Rather, it is a bringing into focus and celebrating what is taking place now: Christ's dying and rising in us who are this Body ever so slowly as we are on our way to full sharing in Christ's glory.
Of course, it is still a few weeks away, but why not make plans to make sure that the Three Great Days (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday/Easter Sunday) do not simply pass by or are another long weekend. If at any time of the year it should be visible that we are Christians, it is on these Three Great Days with their special services:
Holy Thursday: |
March 20th |
OLV |
7:00 p.m. |
Mass of the Lord’s Supper |
Good Friday: |
March 21st |
OLV |
3:00 p.m. |
Celebration of the Lord’s Passion |
|
|
St. Malachy |
7:30 p.m. |
Reflection/Mediation |
Holy Saturday: |
March 22nd |
OLV |
9:00 p.m. |
Easter Vigil |
Easter Sunday: |
March 23rd |
St. Malachy |
9:00 a.m. |
Eucharist |
|
|
OLV |
11:00 a.m. |

Let us make sure to be part of these services, because they concern the very meaning and purpose of life as we Christians see it. The Jews can do this sort of thing; the Muslims can do it; we as Christians have very good reasons to do it too!
THE MASS OF CHRISM
- Wednesday, March 19th, 7:30 P.M, ST.Joseph Cathedral, 245 St. Joseph Blvd., Gatineau, (Hull Sector) The Bishop invites all to attend.
AS PART OF PREPARATION FOR EASTER - RECONCILIATION/CONFESSION
- If the season of Lent is about conversion, repentance and renewal, then it is quite appropriate to celebrate it in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We can celebrate it in two ways: in a more individual way and in a communal way.
The individual way of celebrating God's forgiveness in our lives (by going to confession) has been a unique feature for us as Catholics. But this is no longer the case for many of us for a variety of reasons. Our bishop, at the urging of the Pope, asks us to take a second look at it, perhaps to re-discover its true meaning as a sacrament of conversion. We certainly would not want to lose it as an important means to have Jesus Christ grow on us. That is why anyone can approach a priest at any time for this sacrament of God's forgiveness.
God's forgiveness can also be celebrated in a communal way. This communal celebration is not meant as an easy substitute for the individual confession. Both forms complement one another. In the communal celebration we reflect together on how we as individuals but also as a faith community stand in need of God's mercy and forgiveness. And as a community we celebrate, in thanksgiving, God's true gifts of grace and forgiveness.

THE DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE "SHARE LENT" COLLECTION
- In the course of the year we have a number of second collections for a variety of causes. The Development and Peace collection is different, however. Yes, the special envelope is part of next Sunday's bulletin. But ideally, what we put in there is what we have accumulated during all of Lent by our fasting. Handing in that envelope is a real Easter gesture, and so, one that could wait to be presented as late as Easter’s dawning on March 23rd. …Imagine the new life we can bring to people in the developing world by our whole Lenten effort!
“I believe – I give” |
Justice, peace, solidarity, the right to have a voice in decisions that effect our lives and communities – these values are fundamental both in our Catholic faith and to the work of Development and Peace. I encourage you to reflect and to act on your faith by giving generously to Share Lent 2008, because we believe. Inside this bulletin, you will find an envelope for the Development and Peace Share Lent collection for next weekend. |

The Hunger Meal will be held in the OLV Church hall at 5:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to share a solidarity meal (soup and bread), see the video prepared by Development and Peace on the rebuilding of villages after the tsunami and hear from our guest speaker, Mr. Fidèle Banza Mutombo, a project coordinator with one of our partners in the Democratic Republic of Congo. |
