Food for Thought |
The word "salt" pervades the English language and its phrases; it is found in most parts of the human body, it is essential to the health of the planet and its creatures. It is vital and everywhere.
Jesus sets the bar high. As his followers, we are called to draw others to the love of God, to stay alert despite the distractions and even opposition of those around us. Lord, keep me refreshed.

ARE YOU NEW TO OUR PARISH? WELCOME! |
Welcome to those who want to make our parish their faith home. You may have come from other places. You may have been “away for a while”. Be assured that we love to have you among us. We would appreciate it very much if you identified yourself at Mass. It would also help if you would take the time to fill out a registration form. The next time you are with us, you may leave it in the collection basket or give it to one of the ushers or to the priest.
Thank you and welcome. |

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION
Our two parishes are in the process of determining if there will be sessions for sacramental preparation for Reconciliation/First Communion as well as Confirmation. In order to better plan for these sessions, parents should register with the Secretary no later than February 11th, 2011 for all the above sacraments. Once registrations are received, we will determine what, when and where these sessions will be offered.
ECUMENICAL SUNDAY SCHOOL
The next Ecumenical Sunday School service at St. Stephen’s is scheduled at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, February 6th.
WEEKLY ENVELOPE RECEIPTS
If you wish to have a receipt please provide us with a self-addressed stamped envelope. You may drop this into the collection basket or drop it off at the office.
7-DAY CANDLES
Please note that due to the increase in cost of these candles, we will be asking for a donation of $2.50 instead of the current donation of $2.00 starting this week.
PLANNED CAPITAL PROJECTS
The wardens are looking at two major capital items this year, as follows:
- Upgrading of Bathrooms in the Basement - At present, a study is being undertaken on how to make the two bathrooms in the basement more accommodating, primarily for the elderly. Once plans are finalized, they will be communicated to parishioners.
- Fence along Joseph Street Property – Plans will be developed to build a fence along the church property line where the cedar hedge was located. This project will also be discussed with parishioners.
THANK YOU NOTE TO PARISHIONERS
Prior to Christmas last year, the OLV Society donated 10 meat pies and 5 pumpkin pies to a local organization that provides a Christmas supper for the less fortunate or for those who find themselves alone at Christmas time. The sponsoring organization recently forwarded a note of thanks for our support.
The supper, which was held at the local Bowling Alley, served a total of 45 persons. The group consisted of families, the elderly and single parents, all of whom either couldn’t afford a Christmas meal or who didn’t want to be alone. The event was in fact more than a simple supper, as there was singing, dancing and gift giving. A good time was had by all and the event was termed a great success by everyone involved.
This was the 3rd annual supper titled “We gather at Christmas” and this year saw a dramatically increased number of those attending. The two young people who organized this event, Émilie Barrette and Claude Cadieux, are to be congratulated for this wonderful initiative. Plans are already in place for next year’s event and hopefully, our two Parishes will once again be able to provide support for this worthwhile activity.

OLV ROOF PROJECT
Over the past two weeks, we have received 3 donations in support of the roof project. Agnes Ducharme and Betty Bisson both donated $100.00, while we received $200.00 as an anonymous donation. This brings the total amount raised to $17,200. This is more money than the Wardens ever dreamed would be collected. Heartfelt thanks to both parishioners and outside organizations for their support in making this fund-raising campaign such a success. The Valentine’s dance will be the last fund-raising event and will signal the end to our campaign.
VALENTINE’S DANCE
Valentine’s Dance – Saturday, February 19th at 8:30 p.m with the Phil Casey Band, featuring Phil Casey, John Gorman, Viateur Pagé and Mark Lemmens. The dance will be held in the church basement and the tickets will be $10.00 which will include a light lunch. Tickets are now on sale.
ST. PATRICK’S TEA
Our St. Pat’s tea will be held on Saturday, March 19th – please reserve this date for an afternoon of fun and friendship.
GOSPEL MATTERS CONCERT
Saturday, April 30th with Lyoness Woodstock and the Gospel Matters Band, featuring Judy Woodstock and Russ Orange, with special guest, Jason Roos.
HEART & SOUL GOSPEL CHOIR SPRING CONCERT
- Thursday, May 12th.
SPRING SUPPER AND BALLOON AUCTION
- Friday, May 20th.
CANCER FOR THE RELAY FOR LIFE
At the St. Pat’s tea, there will be a table set up to purchase Salsa and butter tarts and a few handmade items. All proceeds from that table will go to Cancer for the Relay for Life. The Relay for Life will be held on Friday, June 10, 2011 under the Brady Bridge. All are invited to attend this event either as walkers or visitors. Please note that soft drink cans, beer and soft drink bottles are still being collected by Monique and all monies raised goes to this event.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
A small church with a big vision has greater impact than a big church with a small vision. Whether there is a large group in attendance or just a few in attendance, numbers are not the measure of success in God’s view. He looks at the heart of the church through its Parishioners.
