Reading I Job 7.1 – 4, 6-7 Responsorial Psalm Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.
Reading II 1 Corinthians 9. 16 – 19, 22 - 23 Gospel Mark 1. 29 - 39
Food for Thought
  • Jesus liked physical contact. He lifted the sick woman by the hand. He put his fingers into the ears of the deaf mute and touched his tongue with spittle. He touched lepers. Jairus begged him: Lay your hand on my daughter to make her better.
  • Lord, let me not fear to touch, to bless, and to come close to others as you did.

ARE YOU NEW TO OUR PARISH?     WELCOME!

Welcome to those who want to make our parish their faith home. You may have come from other places. You may have been “away for a while”. Be assured that we love to have you among us. We would appreciate it very much if you identified yourself at Mass. It would also help if you would take the time to fill out a registration form. The next time you are with us, you may leave it in the collection basket or give it to one of the ushers or to the priest.

Thank you and welcome.

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The following reflection on today’s readings was written by Walter Vogels for the Novalis publication called Celebrate:

Today’s first reading presents a rather pessimistic outlook on life, like the suffering and injustice in our world that may seem hopeless. No human system has succeeded in solving these issues.

Like Job, we know that only God can give us hope: “Remember.” Jesus offers hope to the sick and to those who are imprisoned by evil.

Jesus proclaimed this in Galilee, Paul brought it freely to people in different parts of the world and each Christian is called to do this, not only in beautiful words, but also in deeds.
Today’s readings are challenging us to be “proactive Christians”. Are we up to the challenge? What good deeds are we prepared to do, both as individuals, and as a community?

TWO BAPTISMS
In the past few weeks, we have been fortunate to witness the baptism of two new members in our parishes: Riley Patrick Hawken, son of Jennifer Blais and Jeffrey Hawken, at OLV on January 18th, 2009 and Sarah Therese Cameron, daughter of Tracy Middleton and Brian Cameron, at St. Malachy on February 7th. Congratulations to both families and thanks as well for sharing this occasion with all parishioners during our regular weekend masses.

These events could not be done without the dedication of two parishioners from St. Malachy - Ellen Butler and Ann Price. Parishioners of both parishes are extremely grateful for this continued dedication. Many thanks Ellen and Ann!
